IRENA - Coming Soon!

So, what or who is IRENA? IRENA stands for International Renewable Energy Agency. It is not a perfect acronym, but it fits and is easy to say. Currently there are 88 member countries and a decision to choose a headquarter location will be made soon.

There are four proposed locations, with Germany, Austria, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates. The location will probably be chosen next week.

Expect to see IRENA in environmental and renewable energy related articles more and more.

IRENA was established on 26 January 2009 in Bonn, Germany. After a visit to the website and looking at a list of current members, up to 110 signatory states now, the United States is not on the list. I wonder if our leaders are aware of this new organization.

From the IRENA FAQ page: "The overarching goal of IRENA is a rapid transition towards the widespread and sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide."

From the article:

"Zeta Communities, which is headquartered in South of Market and owns a manufacturing plant in San Leandro, is close to completing its first "zero energy" townhome in Oakland."

The idea here is sustainable living starting with the dwelling. I think this is a great idea. Really this should be pushing the bar for all new housing construction.

With my eye on all things green seemingly all the time, I love to see things like this that show we are still innovating to create a sustainable future without compromise.

If there were a red color silicon to really blend this, it would be incredible. I think as years go by, our tastes will change as we grow accustomed to views that include renewable energy sources. Who knows, a home wind turbine may become a status symbol the way our cars have.

An inspiring story like this helps make Monday a lot better. Way to go Sara!

From the Contra Costa Times: "As her fellow passengers panicked, 15-year-old Sara Broski, of Alamo, stepped up to the plate and calmly saved the Clayton woman's life. She knew what to do thanks to her recent CPR training."
